Gluten Free Shampoo Products:

We've recently had emails asking us what hair products are gluten free. We've been contacting the companies of the products we carry to find out the answer to that question. As soon as we know, we'll let you know.

UPDATE: We've been writing to hair product companies, asking them about gluten in their formulations. We've only heard back from a few, but they're all saying the same thing. If they call a product "gluten free", this means that the product's formula does not contain any gluten. However, these companies are saying that they have no way of knowing if the raw material used in the product has previously come into contact with gluten while it was being stored or delivered to the manufacturing plant. This means that there is a very small chance that gluten may be present, even though it is not part of the formulation for the product.
In the meantime, we've been researching the potential harm of gluten in hairWheat - A common source of Gluten products to those with celiac disease. According to the articles we've read, gluten in hair products, like shampoo, should not be harmful to those suffering from celiac disease. Online articles, like the ones we found at MayoClinic.com and CeliacDisease.about.com, both state that gluten molecules are "too large to be absorbed through the skin". What you might have to worry about is if you somehow accidentally ingest the hair products. How could that happen? Well, if you have younger children who have celiac disease, maybe they could accidentally ingest a strand of hair or even the soap bubbles while they bathe. It really seems to depend on how sensitive you are and how great your concern is.

Get the Scoop on Gluten Everyone reacts to different elements in different ways.  Some people say that after they stopped using shampoo or lotion that contained gluten, they no longer had adverse skin reactions/irritations. Because gluten is too large of a molecule to be absorbed by skin, they were probably having a reaction to a different ingredient in the product and not the gluten.

We're still learning about gluten in hair products and shampoo. If you'd like to pass us any helpful information you may know about gluten in hair products, feel free to email us. There is also a great discussion board about this topic at www.Celiac.com
