First, we'd like to share our opinions on natural, or homemade hair conditioners. A lot of people are looking to cut costs and turn to their pantries and fridges for "natural conditioners". The most popular items to use as a homemade conditioner seem to be olive oil, eggs, lemon, and mayonnaise.

The blue molecules represent a scientifically formulated conditioner. The red & green molecules represent a homemade conditioner. The blue molecules are able to penetrate and bond to the hair shaft, while the red & green are too large and simply "bounce" off.

The major problem with all of these items is that they are not meant to be used on your hair. Salon hair conditioners are specially formulated by scientists to heal your hair. Salon products are comprised of the smallest molecules possible, which allows the salon conditioner to penetrate the hair cuticle (the outmost layer of the hair shaft) and bind to the core of the hair, healing your hair from the inside as well.  The home remedies, listed above, are made up of larger molecules and are not capable of penetrating the hair cuticle; it never gets past the outer layer of your hair.So these do-it-yourself conditioners may seem like they work, when in reality all they really do is add temporary shine to your hair. There is no long term benefit from using homemade conditioners.

There are many oils for hair repair out on the market today. The thing that is important to note is that they are not made up of  just oil. Most of the products contain several oils, as well as other ingredients, like vitamins and minerals. Lots of people who use olive oil as a conditioner say they apply the olive oil, then shampoo their hair three or four times to remove the oil. This is causing even more damage to your hair! The olive oil clings to the outer layer of your hair, causing you to have to scrub and scrub away at it. Scientifically formulated salon oils can be applied after you shower, and left in your hair until your next shower. The active healing ingredients and beneficial oil has time to penetrate the hair and protects it all day long, giving you shiny, smoother hair that is healing at the same time.
