Our world has been filled with toxins and there is no one to blame but ourselves. Accompanying our evolution and technological advances is the silent, and sometimes unseen, threat that hides everywhere from the air we breath to the water we drink. Probably the worst part about this situation is that we do not know all of the toxins, and their effects, that are threatening our health. The best defense we have against these toxins is to avoid using products that contain them, preventing them from entering our bodies and washing into the earth.

Green Hair Care can be a topic that is tricky to navigate. Because the cosmetic industry in the United States has been primarily self-regulated since 1938, federal review or approval does not have to be applied to personal care products before the products are marketed to the public. The result is that some highly toxic elements have become the standard product ingredients in the majority of hair care products. There are over 10, 000 different chemicals currently being used in the production of personal care products. Of these 10,000 chemicals, less than 12% have been tested and assessed for health and safety.

Another huge problem with “going green” with you hair care products, is that hair products companies are not, technically, required to list every single ingredient in the product. How do many companies try to get around listing certain ingredients? They add a trademark, secret formula to the ingredients list, which would look something like this:
Company’s Natural Enzyme Blend ®. A company who lists this “patented” formula, blend, etc, does not have to tell you what ingredients comprise this formula, because of the patent. Does this mean that every company that has a “patented” formula is hiding toxic ingredients in their products? No. But the unfortunate truth is that there really is no way to find out.
