Harmful Chemicals in Hair Products:
Sodium Lauryl Suflate/Sodium
Laureth Sulfate: Both of these are cheap, harsh detergents that are
found in the majority of Shampoos. These sulfates are added to shampoos
because they are cheap and create lather (aka foam, bubbles). They are
also commonly used in car washes, garage floor cleaners and as engine
degreasers. These sulfates are generally derived from petroleum and
often cause eye irritation, scalp irritation and tangled hair.
Parabens (methyl, propyl, butyl, and ethyl): Parabens are added
to hair products because they act as preservatives, inhibiting microbial
growth & extending the shelf life of products. Unfortunately, parabens
are also estrogenic and disruptive of normal hormone function. Exposure
to these parabens has been linked to Breast Cancer. Parabens are
also known to cause allergic and skin reactions.
Synthetic Colors & Dyes: Colors & Dyes are commonly used to make
products pretty. Though they create visual appeal, there is nothing
appealing about them. Colors & Dyes are created from coal tar and
contain heavy metal salts that deposit toxins onto the skin, which can
cause irritation. Research has shown that nearly all synthetic colors
and dyes are carcinogenic. Check your label for something that looks
like this: FD&C Red No.6 or D&C No.6, and avoid products containing this
at all costs.
Diethanolamine (DEA) and Triethanolamine (TEA): These ingredients
are synthetic emulsifiers and/or foaming agents. They are highly acidic
and can cause allergic reactions, eye irritation, and dryness of hair
and skin. DEA and TEA are ammonia compounds, which are potent
carcinogens. DEA can also strip away vital amino acids from the
hair and skin, like keratin. This can leave the hair and skin feeling
dry and unmanageable, lifeless and dull.
Phthalates: These are commonly found in synthetic fragrances. To
avoid these, choose products that do not list "fragrance" as an
ingredient. Instead, opt for products that contain essential oils and
fruits. Studies have shown that phthalates (a chemical found in some
plastics) can actually cause damage to the liver, lungs and kidneys.
Propylene Glycol: This is a cheap, synthetic petrochemical that
is used as an emulsifying base in creams and lotions, supposedly to make
skin look smooth. Ultimately, Propylene Glycol actually ages the skin at
a faster rate. Not only can it lead to poor, saggy skin, but, through
absorption, it can cause allergic reactions, as well as liver & kidney
damage. Propylene Glycol is a major ingredient in brake and hydraulic
fluid.
Formaldehyde: Often times, formaldehyde can form in the processing or
use of a product. It hides on labels behind other names, like doazolidinyl urea, imidazolidinyl urea, quarternium-15.
Adverse reactions to formaldehyde can include allergies and
neurotoxicity.
Mineral Oil: This is a cheap, petroleum-based oil that clogs the
skin's pores and enlarges them! This can lead to poor, saggy skin and
even acne. Mineral oil also decreases the skin cell's ability to
exchange nutrients and waste products.
